Why pre-marital counseling is worth the time and effort
Weddings are important—and so is all the preparation that goes into them. However, I am convinced that couples need to prepare for life beyond the wedding day every bit as much as the big day itself (if not more so!). How much have you thought about preparing for your married life after your wedding day?
When I share pre-marital counseling with couples the sessions are opportunities to build trust with each other, help partners to grow in their understanding of each other, and, yes, help to plan the wedding ceremony. I thoroughly enjoy hearing couples’ love stories and learn about their motivation for seeking marriage. I tend to listen as much as I speak in pre-marital counseling sessions. If you want to hear me talk for 15-20 minutes without interruption, come to a worship service and hear me preach!
The primary tool that I use to help couples grow their understanding of each other is the Prepare/Enrich assessment. The pastor who officiated my wedding used this tool with my wife and me, and the discussions we had based on the assessment added depth, colour, and texture to our relationship that I never expected. Isn’t your married life after your wedding day worth at least the same time and effort as your wedding day?
I pray that the Spirit blesses you as you explore the richness of married life with your partner!
